Whether it is timber, carpet or tiles, the flooring options for your family home are endless. With a bounty of textures, colours and styles, the flooring design and materials you choose will undoubtedly tick the boxes when it comes to form and function – with all your family in mind.
Danielle Bang, Henley showroom Interior Designer, walks you through the numerous flooring options available and how best to decide which flooring options are right for you and your home.
With most houses featuring multiple flooring materials, depending on your room and your needs, think about the high-traffic areas and high visibility areas of your home and choose the flooring that fits those needs.
Resonating towards timber flooring
“The warmth and beauty of engineered timber is undeniable with its long-lasting appeal and its sophisticated aesthetic. It oozes luxury and will stand the test of time,” says Danielle.
According to Danielle, hybrid flooring is gaining popularity due to its durability, easy installation and realistic look.
“It allows you to have a timber look floor which is 100% waterproof as opposed to real engineered timber floors..”
Timber floors are also popular in Melbourne due to our cooler climate and are softer under foot as opposed to tiles. Timber flooring is generally the preferred option for living and dining areas. It is also gaining popularity in bedrooms for its hyperallergic properties.
The cosiness of carpet
When you think of carpet, your mind wanders towards comfort and creating a room which is snug an inviting.
Carpet is generally favoured in bedrooms and the theatre room for is luxurious feel and noise reduction. Having a cosy and textured feel underfoot is ideal as you unwind after a busy day.
“A good quality carpet is made from solution dyed nylon and is hard wearing. Wool is also an excellent natural material and fire resistant. However, wool can be problematic for people who suffer from allergies.” Danielle says.
Tile tough and versatility
Tiles come in many shapes and forms, with countless colours and design configurations to choose from. From mosaic, subway tiles, textured to large-format, tiles are a classic choice that is also hardwearing and resistant to wear and tear.
According to Danielle, tiles are great for wet areas because they are waterproof, durable and easy to maintain.
“Ceramic tiles are suitable for low traffic areas such as ensuites, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundries. Hallways, living and dining areas are high traffic areas and a porcelain tile is more suitable for its durability. Porcelain tiles are baked at a higher temperature and for longer in a kiln, so they are more durable and less likely to crack.” Danielle says.
“Traditionally tiles have been popular as the main flooring in warmer climates however with the introduction of electric underfloor heating, tiles can be used to help keep your house warm throughout winter and cool throughout summer. This is an extremely energy efficient way to warm your house not only in the living areas but also in wet areas such as a bathroom.”
“With a suite of brands, colours and textures, you are spoilt for choice on what is on offer but all our interior designers are here to help you with every flooring decision you make.”
